The Body as Landscape

I work primarily with the human form, using the figure as a metaphor. I use gesture, color, light and texture to evoke emotion and interconnection.

Growing up in Northern California, I saw what I thought looked like bodies or parts of the human form in the hills and trees. During the many hours I spent drawing the human form in College the different postures would evoke images similar to the ones I had seen so often as a child. As the light would change during the day, I would watch the shadows grow long and dark as they moved across the model’s body. Deep valleys would appear and disappear along their necks, backs and sides. Initially I began capturing these images on film as self-portraits with a tripod. Later, with the help of many teachers, friends and professional models, what I now call “Figure Landscapes” evolved.
